Marie-Rosalie Bonheur’s life
Marie-Rosalie Bonheur, known as Rosa Bonheur, was born in Bordeaux in 1822. This well-known French painter and sculptor focused on animals in her work. She quickly became associated with the early days of feminism because of her freedom-loving lifestyle.
Enter Rosa Bonheur’s world by visiting her workshop
The museum is a tribute to this artist’s unusual lifestyle. It is located in Seine-et-Marne, the same department as Elysée Val d’Europe hotel, in the By château. This was Rosa Bonheur’s home for almost for decades, beginning in 1859. Since the artist’s passing on May 25th 1899, the workshop has been frozen in time. Her embroidered blouse and hat, as well as her palettes, paintbrushes, sketchbooks and notebooks, are all on display to give visitors an intimate look at the artist’s life. In an idyllic setting, visitors can easily imagine the smell of turpentine or the sound of piano music. This museum has something to offer guests of all ages!
